SCHEDULE

Friday, April 17

6:00pm - 9:00pm: Session Options Available

We will have multiple interactive sessions on the Friday evening that provide participants with both foundational knowledge and hands-on skill development. Together, these sessions strengthen foundational clinical abilities while promoting confidence, competency, and operational safety in everyday MFR practice.

As an attendee you will be contacted once signed up for the Friday night session to ask which of the following sessions you would like to be part of.

CPR
This interactive CPR session provides participants with both foundational knowledge and hands‑on skill development. The 30‑minute presentation reviews current best practices, high‑performance CPR techniques, and updates that impact real‑world patient outcomes. Participants then move into 60 minutes of practical, team‑based CPR drills, working in pairs to refine compression quality, teamwork, and communication under pressure. With a small group size capped at 45, the environment ensures individualized feedback from experienced facilitators. This session reinforces lifesaving skills that every responder relies on, boosting confidence and readiness for cardiac arrest emergencies.
Simulations
These 30‑minute high‑fidelity simulation scenarios immerse participants in dynamic and unpredictable patient encounters set in an ambulance environment. Working in groups of three, participants respond to realistic medical or trauma calls that challenge assessment skills, communication, and rapid decision‑making. The simulation truck replicates on‑scene pressures, environmental constraints, and the teamwork necessary for safe, efficient care. Facilitators guide participants through scenario execution followed by brief, targeted debriefs that highlight clinical reasoning, strengths, and growth opportunities. This session strengthens responders’ confidence and performance under stress while promoting safe, structured approaches to complex patient situations.
Skills Sessions
This rotating skills lab allows responders to practice skills, including: effective hemorrhage control, airway management, and safe stretcher operation. Participants engage in small groups to ensure targeted coaching and hands‑on repetition. The hemorrhage‑control station focuses on proper tourniquet placement and compression‑bandage techniques that stop life‑threatening bleeding. The airway station reinforces core MFR interventions that maintain ventilation and oxygenation. The stretcher‑operation station emphasizes safe lifting practices, patient handling, ergonomics, and teamwork. Together, these stations strengthen foundational clinical abilities while promoting confidence, competency, and operational safety in everyday MFR practice.
Escape Room
This fast‑paced, team‑based challenge blends critical thinking, communication, and medical knowledge in a fun experiential format. Small groups of five enter a themed environment where they must interpret clues, solve clinical puzzles, and complete scenario‑based tasks within a 15‑minute window. Each session encourages creative problem‑solving, leadership, and collaboration under time pressure; mirroring the cognitive demands of real emergency response. A short reset period between sessions ensures an organized flow and maintains the immersive setting for all participants. This engaging activity reinforces teamwork and situational awareness while providing a memorable, entertaining learning experience.
Meet & Greet Social
The Meet & Greet Social provides an informal, welcoming space for responders from across the province to connect, share experiences, build relationships, and explore sponsors of the event. Participants can enjoy light snacks while engaging in conversation with peers, instructors, team members from various agencies, and vendors on-site. The relaxed, alcohol‑free setting encourages inclusive participation and supports meaningful networking without distractions. This session helps build professional community, fosters collaboration amongst MFR teams, and creates a positive atmosphere heading into the next day’s educational programming. It’s an ideal opportunity to meet new colleagues, reconnect with familiar faces, and strengthen the MFR network.

11:00am - 11:30am: General Trauma Triage with Dr. John Armstrong

This trauma-focused session introduces participants to the “Trauma Diamond,” a structured and practical framework for triaging injured patients. Attendees learn how mechanism of injury, assessment findings, and Situational factors guide triage decisions and transport priorities. The session integrates real-world examples to illustrate how responders can rapidly categorize patients while maintaining scene safety and operational awareness. By applying this systematic approach, MFRs enhance their ability to support efficient, evidence-informed trauma management alongside paramedic teams.

11:30am - 12:30pm: Lunch & Networking Break

A dedicated hour to relax, refuel, and continue connecting with fellow responders, partners, and vendors. The bingo card encourages participants to interact with exhibitors and explore learning opportunities.

12:30pm - 12:45pm: Meet Your Patient with Janel Swain

This presentation focuses on early recognition and management of sepsis, emphasizing how symptoms may appear in common call types such as respiratory complaints and fall injuries. Participants learn to identify subtle but critical warning signs, understand the pathophysiology of sepsis, and apply frontline interventions within the MFR scope. Through a patient-centered approach, the session highlights how timely recognition can dramatically influence outcomes. Responders will gain confidence in identifying at-risk patients and supporting transport decisions that expedite advanced care.

12:45pm - 1:45pm: The Great Debate with Janel Swain

This energetic, structured debate showcases three teams tackling a provocative or high-interest topic relevant to emergency response. Each side presents arguments supported by evidence, field experience, and clinical reasoning. Audience members are encouraged to listen critically, consider diverse viewpoints, and participate in post-debate reflection. Although the topic and debaters will be announced later, the format promises lively discussion, professional dialogue, and a chance to challenge assumptions in a respectful, engaging environment. The session promotes critical thinking, teamwork, and the exploration of complex issues impacting MFR practice.

1:45pm - 2:30pm: Clinical Updates with Dr. Andrew Travers

This session reviews key changes to the latest Heart and Stroke Foundation resuscitation guidelines, emphasizing updates relevant to Medical First Responders. Participants learn how evolving evidence shapes best practices in CPR, AED use, and early cardiac care. The session breaks down what’s new, what has changed, and why it matters in the field. Responders gain clarity on how guideline updates translate to practical actions during real emergencies, ensuring that care remains aligned with current national standards.
